Bristol is a famous maritime port in South West England. In 1497, John Cabot sailed from Bristol, reaching North America in 1497. In 1841 Brunel’s Great Western Railway linked London to Bristol, allowing passengers to board the first steam ships to travel the Atlantic, further reducing the time taken to get to America.
More recently aviation has taken centre stage, with aircraft such as the Concorde and Airbus having strong ties to Bristol; Space travel is one of Bristol’s claims to fame as well, with our famous Wallace and Grommit’s journey to the moon, and the Beagle 2 Mars rover originating here.
Bristol is also one of the main financial hubs outside London with many banks and insurance companies having their headquarters in Bristol, as well as having its own currency, the Bristol Pound. Bristol’s harbourside is now a modern centre of culture and heritage, with museums, cinemas, meeting places and of course lots of Ingress portals.
